Alternatives to Pine on your Farm

March 28 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Farm Forestry Association

Free 3-hour field days event 28th March in Masterton

Want to grow some trees on your farm, but not pines?  Learn about the benefits of planting alternative species.  This free 3-hour field day involves a tour of a featured property (available on registration).  A NZ Farm Forestry member will share their experience – a description of the location, why the trees were chosen, how they were planted, their survival and performance, the environmental benefits they have provided, and the costs and expected returns.

Hosted by the NZFFA, with support from Te Uru Rākau – NZ Forest Service.

Everyone is welcome but registration is essential, as details of the Masterton location is included in the email confirmation.  Brochures, tea and coffee will be available. Register here https://www.nzffa.org.nz/events/

We encourage landowners to plant trees where that will improve land use, with emphasis on species that have proved successful in Masterton, the planting location  (temperature, soils, shelter, and moisture); establishment; weed control; and management. Species may include:

  • Eucalypts – especially ground durable
  • Poplar – for erosion control and timber
  • Cypress – for high value timber
  • Redwoods – for erosion control, timber and carbon sequestration
  • Douglas fir – for cooler sites
  • Oaks – for high value timber
  • Totara – for high value timber

Handouts will be provided, and NZFFA members, field advisors from Te Uru Rakau – NZ Forest Service, and Beef + Lamb NZ will be on hand to answer questions.

Registrations may be limited for health and safety reasons. If an event is cancelled or postponed for weather or other reasons, all registered attendees will be notified.
